My name is Enrique Farrera, and I have several roles in our association and community. I serve as a board of directors at the Oregon Education Association and National Education Association. I participate in our association to empower educators and students. I want an association that is reflective of Oregon educator’s professionals. Our association members are the professionals that should guide educational policy and our organization’s goals. To uplift the voices of all educators, students, and communities who have been historically ignored. I believe we can succeed in this cultural shift and vision together. As a result, my passion for education and the labor movement is strong. There are no other social forces that allow people to escape poverty and change the world.
I advocated to advance members’ and students’ lives and fight for social, racial, and economic justice as a local president, bargaining team member, and board of directors. I have advanced policies and change systems to improve members of all membership classifications and students’ lives.
I immigrated to the United States when I was young with my mother. My mother cleaned houses. At the same time, I helped with my little sisters and where I could. After high school, I attended community college, however, as an undocumented student. I had to stop school because I could not afford school and the proper mentorship and guidance were not available for me. During my college break, I became a young dad and quickly learned I needed to go back to college to increase my job opportunities and pay. While in college, I joined the Marine corps, worked multiple jobs, and completed my Bachelors in Anthropology and Masters in Postsecondary Adult and Continuing Education that led me to the professional field of education.
